How to Make An Invisible Password Protected Folder

Submitted by on Thursday, 10 December 200952 Comments

Password-protected-folderDo you want to password protect your folder? Do you want to make it invisible so that it remains unnoticed by other users of your PC? Well, here is a way to do that. In this post, I will show you how to make a password protected folder in Windows without using any additional software. Here is is step-by-step procedure to create a password protected folder:

Step-1: Create a new folder (Right-click -> New -> Folder) and give it any name of your choice. For instance I name it as ABC.

Step-2: Now, in this folder place all the important files, documents or any folders that you want to password protect.

Step-3: Right-click on this folder (ABC) and select the option Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Step-4: Now a new compressed zipped folder gets created next this folder (ABC) with the same name.

Step-5: Double-click on this compressed zipped folder and you should see your original folder (ABC) here.

Step-6: Now go to the File menu and select the option Add a password.

ie: File -> Add a password

Now a small window will pop up and here you can set your desired password. Once the password is set, the folder will ask for the password every time it is opened. Thus ,you have now created the password protected folder.

How to Make the Folder Invisible?

Step-1: Right-click on this password protected folder and select Properties.

Step-2: At the bottom select the option Hidden and press OK. Now your folder gets invisible (hidden).

Step-3: In order to unhide this folder, go to My Computer - >Tools -> Folder options. Switch to View tab, scroll down and under Hidden files and folders you’ll see the following two options:

  • Do not show hidden files and folders
  • Show hidden files and folders

Select the second option and press OK. Now the invisible folder becomes visible in it’s location. To access it you need the password. To make it invisible again, repeat step -1 through step-3 and select the first option and click OK. Now, the folder becomes invisible once again.

I hope you like this post. Pass your comments!! Cheers :)

    @ JED

If you have Winrar then you can use it by default to set the password. The above trick works only in the absense of Winrar/Winzip

    @ Azmat

Seems like it is the result of some virus/malicious program. Please perform a complete virus scan for your computer.

No it’s not because of any Virus. Windows has some bugs and these can be overcome by re-installing the OS.

Srikanth, this has to do with the email hacking page. I couldn’t seem to leave a comment/question there. The Sniper-spy you suggested… would that be compatible if sending it to someone who’s using a mac instead of a pc? I have a PC they have a Mac.
I would really appreciate any help you could offer on this.
    Thank you very much,
    Tachia

  • Srikanth (author) said:

    @ Tachia

Sniperspy is not compatible with MAC. It works only if the target computer runs on PC.

You can increase the security by the following methods.
1)First change ur zip folder into another file format by changing the extension to that of a system file like .sys or .dll etc.To do so u need to uncheck the box HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES in Tools > folder options > View Tab.After unchecking select the zip file and press F2(or right click > rename).Delete the portion after the .(ie zip) and change it to dll.(for eg: abcd.zip will be changed to abcd.dll).Then press enter . It will ask a sequrity question. then press yes. Then it will be changed to a dll file .(To open the file again you need to rename it again as abcd.zip).
2)Now you need to change this to a system file ,for that navigate to the directory where the file is located in command prompt( by cd command eg: to change to c:\games use cd c:\games\).Now write on command prompt “attrib +a +s +h abcd.dll” without quotes. This will assign hidden, archive, system file properties to bcd.dll. To view these files u need to uncheck the option HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES in folder options.

hy!! dude thanxxx its really works but it also works with jzip also….by going into action then encyrept it want password to lock your file…..thanxx

  • Cristiano said:

honestly, this is a very simple way to do that and doesn´t always work, since a lot of ppl use zip and rar files to compress files and zip files are not folders…

the best way to create a safe “folder” or even a virtual drive, is using a tool like truecrypt, create a container file with a good password and a good algorithm and create a virtual drive using the same container…

I Created a safe virtual drive using 100gb of my HD, created the container file with a good encryption and mounted the file as a folder, to create the file it took some hours, but its better than zipping

You can even encrypt the entire system drive with this program, and its free and opensource

    hello guys

I have also a very better technique to hide folder with simply password protected folder. That i want to share with you all.
It is much better than this technique
    if you allow me so……

  • SURYA said:

  • Vishal said:

    Nice trick dude!!

  • Rothlyn said:

Well this post is simple here is an advanced way.

    1. Make a new folder.

    2. rename the folder hold down alt and press 255 on your numpad.
This gives your folder blank name instead of “new folder” it will say ” ” ( without quotes ).

    3. Right-Click the nameless folder and click the Customize tab.

    4. Click “change icon” at the bottom of the menu. Select a blank icon ( it appears as nothing like a space between the other available icons.)

    5. Press ok and ok again and your done.

NOTE: you can also hide it or hide your files in pictures.
