Hack BSNL Broadband for Speed

Submitted by on Sunday, 20 July 200853 Comments

If you are a BSNL broadband user, chances are that you are facing frequent DNS issues. Their DNS servers are just unresponsive. The look up takes a long duration and many times just time out. The solution? There is small hack on BSNL for this. Use third party DNS servers instead of BSNL DNS servers or run your own one like djbdns. The easiest options is to use OpenDNS. Just reconfigure your network to use the following DNS servers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Detailed instructions specific to operating system or your BSNL modem are available in the OpenDNS website itself. After I reconfigured my BSNL modem to use the above 2 IP addresses, my DNS problems just vanished! Other ‘freebies’ that come with OpenDNS are phishing filters and automatic URL correction. Even if your service provider’s DNS servers are working fine, you can still use OpenDNS just for these two special features. After you hack BSNL DNS servers, you will see a noticeable improvement in your broadband speed.

wat should be the default gate way

  • Srikanth (author) said:

    @ neil

If u r using an old modem the default gateway must be entered as it is given by BSNL.But for new modems u can select the option automatically optain IP address.

    Want more speed than this??

Just bookmark the sites you open the most and then ping them in the “command prompt” and correct the bookmarks with the ip addresses these ping requests will generate

(i know i cant explain things but enough for some to get some guideline)

  • Des said:

    Yep, my internet has improved!

  • Angel said:

Hey do we have to make an account with OpenDNS or is it unnecessary to do so?

  • Srikanth (author) said:

    @ Angel

Making an account is not necessary. You just use their DNS server addresses.

  • lifenmore said:

But will this not invite anyone else to hack our system? Is openDNS thing more valnarable to hacking?

  • Srikanth (author) said:

    @ lifenmore

No changing your DNS is harmless. BSNL’s DNS is unreliable. so you can use ny DNS… no prob…

hey !! i am using mtnl service…..and geting 34KBps download speed in 256kbps…..i know that is more than what is said ….. but some of my frnds are getting much more speed than this….can u plzz help me other than open dns…..

  • Srikanth (author) said:

    @ pankaj

It all depends on the Tariff plans that you have chosen. Also in some areas, there may be less load on the server and hence your friends may get more speed. Also it depends upon the site from which you are downloading, because some offer more speed while some doesn’t. So, to test your true download speed, download anything from microsoft.com (any trial programs, free updates etc.) Microsoft offers full bandwidth that supports high speed downloads.

  • firangi bawa said:

@VenomVipes : hii buddy, well i too have an airtel connection, but i used to get a speed of 64 kbps earlier.. but yesterday i opened the modem they provided.
U c there is a small screw next to the ethernet LED , Don’t worry u don’t have to tight the screw it will only slow down yout internet speed.
Unscrew the nuts , and if still it doesn’t increse your speed , use fevicol to connect the ethernet and usb connections together.
I am now getting a speed of 16.2511 mbps @speedtesht.net
