What to do When Your Email Account is HackedIt can be a real nightmare if someone hacks and takes control of your email account as it may contain confidential information like bank logins, credit card details and other sensitive data. If you are one such Internet user whose email account has been compromised, then this post will surely help you out by suggesting some of the steps that you need to take as soon as you realize that your email account is hacked.

Here is a list of steps and procedures that you need to follow in order to initiate the password recovery process:

Steps to Recover Gmail Password:

It can be a big disaster if your Gmail account has been compromised as it may be associated with several services like Blogger, Analytics, Adwords, Adsense, Orkut etc. Losing access to your Gmail account means losing access to all the services associated it with too. Here is a list of possible recovery actions that you can try:

Step-1: Try resetting your password! This is the first step and probably the easiest way to get your account back in action. In this process, Google may ask you to answer the secret question or may send the password reset details to the secondary email address associated with your compromised account. You can reset you password from the following link

Update:

Gmail has now introduced a new feature wherein it is possible to reset your password using your mobile number. Once the reset process is initiated, Gmail will send new login details to your mobile number itself.

If you cannot find success from the Step-1, then proceed to Step-2.

Step-2: Many times the hacker will change the secret question and the secondary email address right after the account is compromised. This is the reason for the password reset process to fail. If this is the case, then you need to contact the Gmail support team by filling out the account recovery form. This form will ask you to fill out several questions like:

  1. Email addresses of up to five frequently emailed contacts
  2. Names of any 4 Labels that you may have created in your account
  3. List of other services associated with your compromised account
  4. Your last successful login date
  5. Account created date
  6. Last password that you remember and many more…

You need to fill out this form as much accurately as possible. It is obvious to forget the dates of last login, account creation and similar terms. However, you need to figure out the closest possible date/answers and fill out this form. This is your last chance!

The more accurate the information filled out in the recovery form, the more the chances of getting your account back. You may reach the account recovery page form the following link

Steps to Recover Yahoo and Hotmail Password:

Unfortunately, for Yahoo/Hotmail there is no second option like filling out the form or contacting the support team. All you need to do is either answer the secret questions that you have setup or reset the password using the secondary email option.

To initiate the password reset process just click on the Forgot password link in your login page and proceed as per the screen instructions.

    Leaving your email on someone else’s server (Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, etc.) just seems like asking for problems. Better to keep all your email completely under your own control.

    I use TrulyMail Portable so I can keep it all on a USB drive (encrypted, of course) but Thunderbird Portable would work as well. The point is that we must protect ourselves by being prudent.

    Hi Sir,

    my couzin hi5 account we want to de-activate however we use the sweetygal_19@hotmail.com to sign in however her email (hotmail) has been hacked and hacker has already change the secrete question as well.

    hello,
    my orkut account was hacked on august 15th. i login into my account with the use of rediffmail. but unfortunately the hacker has changed my id and password.
    i had filled the form for getting back my id but unknowingly i submitted the form many times. i got the reply mail stating that(“Thank you for your report. For account security, we limit the number of requests that can be processed about the same account. Please wait a few days and try filling out the form again.)” .
    so i waited for nearly a week after that i filled the form again and submitted . but after that also i am getting the same message.
    could you just help me that how many days i have to wait to fill the form again.
    is ter any other way to get back my account ..
    plzz help me to get back my account

      Very sorry to hear that your account is hacked. All you need is to do is wait patiently for 2-4 weeks until you get a response from the Gmail team. You canalso reset your password by using your secondary email/secret question. There is no ther way aprat from the above mentioned ones. :(

    hi bro nice post but u missed other ways like social engineering sending a fake mail to the user requesting the username and passwordf from the facebook team…offcourse if u know his email id….and other method like this is one is only for the pro databases is the new world and most powerfully emerging world if u know how to manipulate in ur fingertips u can do almost anything….

    my question as same as asked by some another ajay that while any single mail coming in my inbox it seems as” READ” though i never open it and for this i have changed my email id password twice but no effect and due to this i cant advise to anyone that send me mail on my rediff email id. request you to please help as i am suffering from last week and fear that someone will do misuse of my account.

      Actions that you can take:

      1. Change the password, secondary email address and also the secret question. If you’ve the mobile number option, make sure that your mobile number is correct.

      2. Scan your computer for spyware and make sure that it is clean.

      3. Avoid accessing your email from public places such as cyber cafes.

    I prefer Gmail for the security, but I feel like I have to give too much peronal info to google, because of the way it’s linked to many social networking sites, such as Orkut, Youtube ect.

    I know the person doing it from the emails sent to me, and the sites he goes into,,,one sick,,,@#||@$#,,,I changed my password, I’m not good on a computer, an this guy does not work and on his all the time. I think he is going into , and did use my gmail. I would like to know if he broke the law, or,,?? what can be done,,??,,is there a way to find out if another computer is using my gmail,,and how,,,hope you have time for a reply,,,thank’s..Darrell Netrefa

    My yahoo email account was hacked and used for sending email asking for financial support. I tried to access my account, but my password and my secret questions were changed. The account was locked by yahoo services. the alternate address and the mobile phone number that i have in that account have not been used for years. I just have some social networks connected to that account.

    Please email me whether there is way to recover yahoo email through facebook or linked in account.

    I had a new google account for only about two weeks when they told me it appeared I was signing in from an “unfamiliar” location. But I was at my usual location, at home! I could not get back into my acct without telling them where I “usually” sign in from, which I did not want to do as I was going to be leaving on a trip and wanted to be able to sign in from several locations. Then they asked for an email address where they could contact me, and when I got the email from google, among other things, it asked for my credit card number so they could charge me $1.00 for assistance! I have since left google permanently, I don’t feel like I should have to put up with such nonsense.

      Google usually does not ask for your credit card details or anything as such in your case. Seems like those are phishing emails that are sent from an attacker to rip you off.
