no, your friend was wrong, the type of attack he was thinking of is the PoD (ping of death) attack, and is a very old type of DDoS/DoS attack (almost all computers are protected from it now)

a buffer overflow is usually a zero day exploit where the buffer of a program is overflowed to overwrite other parts of a program&#039;s memory (usually to run code on target machines)

Buffer overflow exploits are much harder to find and achieve, and are generally not used for DDoS/DoS attacks.
